Bread To Brag

I was walking around in One Utama Shopping Centre yesterday when I passed by the now-famous Rotiboy Bakeshoppe, whose success has largely, or some would say solely, been determined by its distinctive Mexican Bun. A woman worker, who could either be Indonesian, Filipino, or a local – one could hardly tell these days – was yelling “Rotiboy! Rotiboy!” in an effort to attract hungry shoppers to the bakery.

I was thinking to myself if her half-hearted hollers were really necessary. As if the overpowering odour of coffee in those Mexican Buns which you can smell a clear 100 metres away wasn’t enough to entice the customer into the place. Or the free advertising, courtesy of the hordes of whole families walking around lazily in the mall, holding the trademark brown paper bags in yellow plastic bags which contain those strong-smelling carbohydrates.

No, I think her very vocal endorsement isn’t quite necessary. Especially when there’s a queue of no less than 15 people waiting to grab their hands on those Rotiboy buns.
